Postdoctoral Fellowship in Design and Prototyping of Optomechanical Measurement Systems (in person, in Edmonton, Alberta Canada).
Description:
Optical diagnostics group (ODG) in collaboration with iClassifier Inc., is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our R&D team in the area of optomechanical design, visualization and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate is expected to start between 20 March to 1 May 2022 and will conduct industry related research in smart agriculture product system design and development. The candidate should have experience with hands-on prototyping, programming, instrumentation, intelligent process planning and optimization for optical measurement processes. The candidate must have a research focus, evidenced through published peer-reviewed articles or thesis, in the following areas:
- Optomechanical design and experimentation
- Visualization and image/video processing
- Data collection and analysis
- Programming
Candidate Profile
The position requires a self-starting researcher with a proven record of accomplishment of publications. The candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills evident through high-quality journal publications in the relevant research areas. The candidate must be able to work and lead in both a team-oriented environment or as an individual.
Skills and Requirements:
- PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Experience with optomechanical design (mounting optical components into mechanical housings)
- Prior experience with optical measurement techniques and imaging systems (industrial depth cameras, extrinsic camera calibration, light source, synchronization, lenses, etc.)
- Knowledge of motion analysis, metrology, depth map imaging
- Proficiency in programming in Python and MATLAB for data/image/video processing and analysis
- Proficient in CAD/CAM packages such as SOLIDWORKS (including parametric design, animation, rendering)
- Knowledge of manufacturing techniques (machining, 3D printing, etc.)
- GD&T, drawing creation, and rapid prototyping for high precision design
- Experience in commissioning the test rigs, defining SOPs, calibration, error analysis
- Experience in working with DAQ devices, data communication protocols, and implementing data acquisition systems for data collection and transferring
- Familiarity and working experience with standards for designing mechanical parts, prototyping and design optimization
- Ability to work with minimal direction and manage a project independently from start to finish
- Being comfortable with performing the research activities (installation of mechanisms, data collection, etc.) in a farm and in the presence of livestock
- Ability to work independently and within a team, including demonstrated leadership qualities and interaction with collaborators
- Strong project management and time management skills
- Strong communication skills and capability of working in a fast-paced work environment
- Comfortable doing hands-on work in the lab to assemble prototypes, solder electronics, instrumentation, and troubleshooting issues
Assets to have:
- Prior experience with Mechatronics and Motion Control
- Prior experience in working with machine learning, especially deep learning and neural networks
- Proficiency in programming microcontrollers such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino using C++
Responsibilities:
- Working, communicating, and collaborating with a cross-functional team of engineers and animal scientists
- Support the evaluation and characterization of mechanical and optical components and system integrations by creating custom optical fixtures
- Design and Fabricate Machines, 3D modeling, Schematics and Layout, Machine Assembly and Repair, Machine Upgrades, Prototype Development
- Conceptual design and mechanical and optical design for the target device
- Prototyping and optimization of the design for mass manufacturing
- Work with other engineers to get requirements and implement that into mechanical CAD
- Ability to design custom parts in a timely manner for prototyping Developing SOP for experiments and data collection
- Writing progress reports and creating technical documentation
- Collaborate with the larger research team to explore concepts and drive optical system development to create compelling experiences
- Programming for collecting data from optical devices and developing proper data transfer
- Image analysis for depth and distance measurement
Eligibility:
The candidate must meet Mitacs program eligibility criteria for postdoctoral fellows. The applicant should be within 5 years of their PhD date of graduation and must be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
Other Notes:
- This position is full time and requires a minimum commitment of 40 hours per week.
- Travel maybe required
- The maximum term of the employment is 2 years with the possibility of 1-year extension.
- The position is not remote and the successful candidate must be in Edmonton AB on the starting date.

Pay: $60k annually ($45k stipend + $15k research expenses)
