Full Job Description
Syngenta is committed to developing innovative Crop Protection Products – but it’s not just what’s in the bottle that counts. Our focus on sustainability, coupled with new digital and spraying technologies means that application technology has never been such an important element of our research and development work. In order to enable Precision Application of agrochemical products, understanding and improving how products are applied needs to be rapidly accelerated. To help us we are looking for a motivated engineer/scientist to join our new Precision Application Technology Team based at the Syngenta R&D site in Berkshire to work at the leading edge of application science. If you are excited by this opportunity, we’d love to hear from you.
About the Role:
Your role will be varied and will take you across many aspects of this exciting field. You’ll be responsible for internal research projects, where you will design and run laboratory experiments on state-of-the-art equipment to expand our understanding of precision spray application technologies and uncover new possibilities in this emerging field.
Part of your role will be to keep up to date with the technology trends and grower needs to ensure that our research is focussed in the right areas. Your research will be rooted firmly in the needs of our customers. You will pursue commercially relevant technologies that contribute directly to innovative products that are aligned to Syngenta’s strategic ambitions to advance a more sustainable agriculture. You’ll lead technical feasibility studies into new technology areas, including literature and patent landscaping, ensuring we’re working in the right areas and getting the most from technology.
Working closely with our formulation chemists, you will help to understand the interactions of Syngenta’s products with Precision Application technology to ensure our products meet growers’ needs. This will mean advancing our capabilities to test Precision Application technology by maintaining and improving existing equipment, developing new test methodologies and looking to purchase new equipment.
You will be in a new team of scientists and engineers locally and connect to a global team of experts with countless years of experience in Agrochemicals. This will bring you in close contact with application specialists, formulation chemists, internal marketing colleagues and business representatives. You will go beyond Syngenta, looking to collaborate with external partners in industry and academia to understand their technology and help develop technologies in partnerships.
About you:
The role is particularly suited to an individual with an appetite for mixing practical work with a desire to understand more deeply the science of spray technology and with the vision to look forward and embrace the technologies of the future.
To succeed in this role you will need:

- A successful track record for innovation in projects and developing ideas in novel directions
- Experience and an enjoyment of hands on work with experimental rigs
- A talent for clear and effective communication to a variety of audiences in a variety of settings
- An analytical and statistical approach to data analysis and experimental design, experience of modelling would be useful
- Hands-on experience of spray application in an agricultural or research setting would also be beneficial, but is not critical as training will be provided
