Overview
The mulksgrp is located the the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the RWTH Aachen University (ranked 3 in German Chemistry according to QS ranking , 14 in Europe, and 61 in the world). We have recently been awarded a Liebig Fellowship for starting up our independent group which contains a fellowship for a doctoral student for 3 years. Aachen is a beautiful (little) old German city located right at the border to the Netherlands and Belgium.
The research project focusses on carbon-based superphiles. We are making dicationic and dianionic moieties with as little stabilisation as possible and as much localisation of the charges as possible on a single carbon atom. These compounds give us insights into interesting reactive intermediates and are promising Lewis catalysts for the synthesis of peptides and ethers. The reactive nature of our chemistry requires a creative combination of a manifold of intert synthesis methods for their synthesis, spectroscopic techniques for their detection, and computational methods for their description and prediction.
The candidate should bring excitement for solving sometimes puzzling research questions and a Master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field. Previous experiences in some of the applied techniques is welcome but not required. Good command of the English language is required. The institute and the city are highly international but social life and some research tasks may be benefit from German language skills.
The position is available from 2022-07-01 but we are flexible on the exact starting time. Please send a cover letter (detailing your motivation and fitness for the position) and your curriculum vitae to Dr. Florian Mulks, if you are interested in working with us.
