Overview

In the broad perspective, CoaST supports development, production and use of high performance organic coating. Working along the whole value chain our research activities cover organic, polymer based coating technologies from raw materials, over formulation, test and characterization to production and application.

Overall, our research is focused on improving the sustainability profile of heavy duty coatings, reducing the use of unwanted substances, facilitating the use of renewable raw materials, improving formulation and test methods through the use of mathematical modelling – we also focus on the invention of totally new types of coatings technology with superior performance or functionality.
Areas of our present research are e.g. anticorrosive coatings for steel structures, blade coatings for wind turbines, intumescent coatings for passive fire protection, fouling control coatings for ships and other constructions.

PhD positions
We are looking for very ambitious PhD candidates interested in working with us in our goal of improving the sustainability profiles over the lifetime of the coatings and to do coatings for a better future. We welcome applications from high performing newly graduated graduates as well as from experienced people from industry having a strong desire to turn towards research.

Over the coming period, we will have a number of PhD positions available within the following areas:

  • Understanding the surface adhesion of waterborne primers for high surface tolerance
  • Understanding the film formation of waterborne coating systems for high and extreme corrosivity
  • Corrosion of monopiles
  • Modeling of pigment dispersion (SDC PhD)
  • Novel methods for high-temperature viscosity measurement (SDC PhD)

You are also welcome to propose your own research idea within the value chain of functional coatings from raw materials to end-product.

Our working environment is international and intercultural. Our working language is English, but knowledge of Danish is beneficial for the positions.

The SDC PhD positions are in collaboration with the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC). The candidates are expected to have external stays in China for a total period of 6-9 months to support our SDC MSc programme in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, and to conduct research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The SDC PhD positions are not available for Chinese citizens.

Qualifications
You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or materials science and be able to handle and have an interest in experimental laboratory and formulation work.

Experience with coatings is an advantage.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Kim Dam-Johansen, Professor Søren Kiil, Associate Professor Hao Wu, Assistant Professor Huichao (Teresa) Bi and Assistant Professor Jochen Dreyer.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is three years.
