The Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research (LPI, www.lpi-jena.de) is a project of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). As one of the supporting institutions of the LPI, the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – (Leibniz-HKI, www.leibniz-hki.de) is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher in Invasive Fungal Infections for 2 years initially with the possibility of extension.
The LPI is being established by a consortium of four research institutions (Leibniz-HKI, Leibniz-IPHT, FSU Jena, University Hospital Jena). In the future, scientists at the LPI will combine photonic technologies with infection research and thus contribute to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods for human medicine. Research results will be transferred to clinical practice along the entire value chain. Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are life-threatening and associated with high mortality rates despite antifungal therapy. One major risk factor is immunosuppression, and patients with malignancies of the haematopoetic or lymphatic system are at particularly high risks for IFIs. However, currently used animal models for IFIs are based on drug-induced immunosuppression rather than actual malignancies as comorbidity. In an interdisciplinary approach, we combine established mouse models for lymphoma and IFIs to investigate to which extent and by which mechanisms lymphomas, as one example for malignancy, impact the clinical course of IFIs, the host response, and the efficacy of antifungal treatment.
– Conduct research on the impact of lymphoma on IFI (candidiasis and aspergillosis) in mice, including practical work with mice, microbiological and immunological analyses
– Contribute to the development of project direction, as the project evolves
– Produce high-quality written reports and draft papers
– Present your results at local meetings and national and international conferences
– Assist with the teaching activities of the group where required
– Contribute to maintaining the friendly, welcoming and collaborative environment within the group
– A PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, or related disciplines. Candidates in the final stages of obtaining their doctorate are also eligible to apply
– Essential methodological skills: experience in working with laboratory mice in the field of either immunology or microbiology
– Desirable methodological skills: flow cytometry, immunological techniques, microbiology techniques
– Highly motivated individuals with organisation skills
– An integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the dynamic interdisciplinary LPI community
– Very good German and English communication skills, both written and spoken
