The Genetics & Biotechnology lab of Professor Charles Spillane in the Plant and AgriBiosciences Research Centre (PABC) in the Ryan Institute at the National University of Ireland Galway is inviting expressions of interest from outstanding students with excellent CVs, to join the SpillaneLab as PhD students in October 2022. Prof. Spillane is seeking talented, hard-working and motivated applicants who are keen to pursue a 4 year structured PhD program in Arabidopsis genetics/epigenetics on any of the following topics: heterosis, reproduction & seed development, polyploidy & genome dosage effects, genome & molecular evolution, and adaptation to climate change. PhD researchers will use the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, and engaged in research work on molecular genetics, epigenetics, genome editing, genomics, phenomics, microscopy and bioinformatics. Successful candidates will work closely with other SpillaneLab research team members working on these topics within the lab. We are seeking highly motivated applicants who are eager to develop a longterm career in plant genetics and epigenetics research, including in translational research to crop and agricultural applications. Successful candidates will ideally have significant and proven prior practical experience of Arabidopsis molecular genetics/genomics research in advanced research lab/institute settings. It is desirable that in addition to significant wet lab skills, successful applicants would also have skills in programming using Python and/or R or a strong interest to develop such skills.
