Some techniques and suggestions
- Be Brief
The tutors are very busy, so all the application documents should be simple and clear.
(1) Half page of application letter;
(2) CV is on two pages;
(3) Two to three letters of recommendation, half a page each;
(4) The plan for the future research project is on two pages, with a maximum of 3 pages.
- Achievements
The first author of SSCI, SCI and EI should have at least one article, preferably two or more.
The first author of the SSCI, SCI, EI tutor, and the second author of the student can also be valid.
- Conscientiously Understand the Research Topic of The Tutor
It’s best to check the tutor’s website to understand the research situation of the tutor’s subject, and the materials provided by you indicate that you are the best candidate for the tutor to select members of the research team.
- How To Write The Application Letter (Two-thirds Pages, No More Than 1 Page)
The application letter is divided into three subsections:
The first paragraph, a sentence, shows that he is very interested in the research project of the tutor.
The second paragraph, 4-6 sentences (6 lines), explains the academic background basis, achievements, research scope, educational background (curriculum) and other academic experiences related to the tutor’s needs for participating in the tutor research project. Be specific and indicate your own Research ability and strong teamwork spirit and ability (speak with facts, don’t talk empty words).
The third paragraph, 2-3 sentences (two lines), shows that it will become the best research partner of the tutor, become a useful talent, and will make outstanding contributions academically.
- How To Write CV (Only Two Pages, No More Than 3 Pages)
Don’t write your CV as rubbish (this was told by a mentor’s secretary when I was in the UK).
95% of the CVs of the applicants I see are garbage. This is also in China. Applicants always complain to me as one of the reasons why the tutors do not reply.
I suggested to my clients that the CV format I used in the UK (for reference), 85% of the applications I submitted received the Offer letter (our Chinese students and friends in China are very envious of me)
CV reference format
The purpose and function of writing CV: provide reasons and basis for the tutor to choose you, not just introduce yourself.

1.1 How many SSCIs have been published, SCI, EI are the first authors themselves (just the number, not all the names of the articles)
1.2 The name of the research project (relevant to the mentor ’s project) that has been done in the past,
1.3 Educational background (courses learned) related to the research topic of the tutor,

(list the names of the research topics you have done and show your research ability and teamwork spirit).
- Education Background
It mainly lists the names of the courses they have learned, trying to show that their basic knowledge is necessary for the tutor’s project.
- Personal Information
5.1 Name,
5.2 Nationality,
5.3 date of birth,
5.4 PhD graduation time, if there is no graduation, the expected graduation time,
5.5 The time available to participate in the research work of the tutor.
If you have many achievements, it is recommended to be a personal homepage, giving a link to the homepage.
- Contact Information of The Two Recommended Professors
CV is the most important and critical file for whether you can get the location. Prepare a standard CV, ready to use. Before applying for the position of a tutor, you should carefully review and make appropriate changes. No, you can’t send a CV to all instructors.
- How To Write a Recommendation Letter
Prepare 2-3 letters of recommendation. In China, the recommendation letter is generally written by the applicant himself and signed by the recommender (the main professors are very busy and the foreign languages are not very good).
Letter of recommendation from your own tutor (only half a page, no more than 1 page)
The recommendation letter is divided into three sections
The first paragraph, a sentence (one line)
I am a mentor for XX students. As a mentor, I recommend this excellent research partner to you.
The second paragraph, (4-6 sentences, only 6 lines)
The student’s academic research background, professional background and scientific research ability, innovation ability, teamwork ability.
The third paragraph (one sentence, lines 2-3)
Explain that this student is your best choice. He must live up to our expectations, make outstanding contributions in your research, and become useful talents in the future. Therefore, I recommend him to you without reservation.
One last sentence: If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (as is the case with the instructors in the UK).
For other letters of recommendation, the recommender must be a professor of this major. It is best if you are a PhD professor in the same college when you are PhD, taking one of your courses, or in the same research group (explained in the first paragraph).
The format and content are roughly the same as those of the tutor, but the sentences and content of the expression should be different.
- How To Write a Research Project Plan: (2-3 Pages, No More Than 3 Pages)
Main principles:
(1) The plan must be innovative, to understand the latest development of the subject in the world, and their own is better than theirs;
(2) The process of the project should be specific and operable;
(3) The research objectives should be specific and achievable (within the time of the research)
(4) The research results of the project can be written and published 2 SSCI, or SCI.
(5) Write a summary or summary of the research plan (lines 4-6, the instructor will understand your research plan after reading this short paragraph. Without having to look down, you decide to choose you and provide you with a location.
The content summary or plan summary put the plan first and the research topic behind.
Note: You can write a 2-page research plan if you are interested and sure of where you are.
Usually prepare a standard research plan document, when applying for a certain research position, understand the tutor ’s research topic and make some appropriate modifications.
- Have a Good Attitude
When the application is unsuccessful (the tutor does not reply to you within two to three weeks, it means unsuccessful, indicating that you are not the ideal candidate for the tutor). There is no effect and benefit. There is a location of advertising material, which has been searched and downloaded nearly 8,000 times. Explain that there are many competitors in a position.
Therefore, when the application is unsuccessful, do not give up, continue to apply, some people will succeed once, some people more than 100 times, so, never give up, never stop, apply once more opportunities once, if you give up the application, forever No chance.
- While Improving The Application Technology, We Must Improve Our Research Capabilities
that is, increase the number of SCI, SSCI, and EI. In any place in the world, in any school, in any tutor, there is a truth that will never change: the outcome wins, the papers wins.
I help foreign students apply for post-doctoral, teaching and research positions. This work has been going on for a year and a half. Searching for relevant recruitment materials every day. All recruitment materials have high-quality paper requirements, and some are the only conditions.
In my opinion, the main purpose of mentor recruitment for post-doctors is two fold: (1) conducting and completing research projects, (2) capable of writing high-quality and publishing academic papers.
Among the applicants I contacted, there is one with 75 SCI as the first author, and there are many applicants with more than 10 SCI as the first author.
- In China, Pay Attention to “The Right Door to Door”
that is, the graduate school rankings are equivalent.In some schools, the enrolled students must graduate from the top 100 in the world, and the top 100 in China must graduate from the universities of “985” and “211”. Therefore, PhD graduates are not applicants for prestigious universities. If you do not have three or more SCI, SSCI, or EI, do not apply to the top ranked Universities or research institutions. If you apply to some lower ranking schools, the possibility of successful application is greater. Or, apply to schools in some underdeveloped areas, or schools with low remuneration, and have more chances of success.
There is a student who graduated from Shanghai University (ranked very low) and asked me to help apply to Tsinghua University, which is generally not possible.
Note: Do Not Have Too Much Restrictions
More restrictions, fewer opportunities, and less chance of success.
Apply for research and teaching positions, in order to get a job, for a higher income, I think it is reasonable.
Please don’t restrict too much and be a cocoon.
In addition, if you are over 35 or over 40, you can apply for Faculty Job. Some universities or doctoral programs are 37 or 40 years old.
Generally, in other countries, only the requirements of research ability and professional background, there are no restrictions on age and graduation time.
We also encourage and support applicants who have such needs to apply and get opportunities in other countries.
- Please don’t have high expectations
Some applicants think that their conditions are very good, and they must find a position with very high income and very high working conditions. As a result, they hesitate, delay in making a decision, and lose the opportunity.
