The Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Idaho seeks a plant scientist for a 9-month, tenure track position that will be filled at the Assistant Professor rank. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a plant breeding program that includes a well-established canola, rapeseed and mustard breeding program. The position will include responsibilities for teaching (30%) and research (70%), as well as departmental, college, university and professional service obligations. The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively with other faculty across the state and participate in research integrating across emphasis areas that include plant biotechnology and crop production in the Plant Sciences Department. The successful candidate will secure funding (e.g. nationally competitive, industry, other) to support the research and breeding programs, publish in high quality refereed journals, actively collaborate with industry in outreach to producers, and develop a national reputation for excellence. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses related to crop production and plant breeding, as appropriate to areas of expertise. It is expected that the successful candidate will advise undergraduate students majoring in the Plant Sciences department and support graduate students on thesis research. Unit/Department Summary The Department of Plant Sciences works to advance research and address many local, regional and global challenges such as breeding plants to tolerate drought-stress, developing sustainable cropping practices and conserving plant species for future generations. The department offers undergraduate majors in crop science, horticulture and urban agriculture, biotechnology and plant genomics and crop management. Minors in crop science and horticulture and advanced degrees in plant science are also offered.
Required PhD in plant breeding, genetics, agronomy, crop science, horticulture or related scientific discipline that demonstrates research competency in plant breeding and genetics and evidence of conducting research on successful plant breeding programs. Demonstrated research competency and evidence of success in publishing research results in refereed scientific journals and peer-reviewed publications Preferred Specialized focus in conducting plant breeding using traditional crossing techniques, field plot research, and laboratory-based molecular tools for genetic advancement of plant populations Post-doctoral experience in Plant Science Evidence of ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams Evidence of strong skills in teaching/public speaking Evidence of success in obtaining competitive research grant support
