Overview

Kalpana Laboratory in the Department of Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine is seeking to fill an NIH-funded post-doctoral position immediately. Highly motivated PhDs are needed to take part in exciting HIV/AIDS projects.
Kalpana laboratory is studying viral replication (HIV-1 and SARS-CoV2) and Cancer. More specifically, the laboratory is interested in understanding the role and functional significance of tumor suppressor INI1/SMARCB1, a component of the chromatin remodeling SWI/SNF complex, in viral replication and in various cancers. Using structural, biochemical, molecular, cell biological, and genetic approaches, the goal is to gain mechanistic insights into INI1 function, which will be further translated to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for viral diseases and cancer. The current position is to study the role of RNA mimicry of INI1 in HIV-1 replication (Nature Communications 2021) and to further develop a new first-in-class HIV-1 inhibitors that are based on the newly gained knowledge of HIV-Integrase-Host factor interaction interface.
